It is reported that every year millions of Rands are poured into
Stokvels or informal savings schemes. It is estimated that there
are more than 800,000 Stokvels in existence with an average
membership of eight to 12 people. It is true that in South Africa
very few industries or communities are not touched by Stokvels
directly or indirectly. Selling to a group as opposed to an
individual creates a powerful and cost-effective distribution network.

For the past six years the University of Cape Town Unilever
Institute has established itself as one of the country's leading
'Think Tanks' when it comes to investigating consumer trends.
Previous projects include Wildfire and Black Diamond. The
Institute has also conducted the most comprehensive research to
date into Stokvels, and at the Amway training session it offers a
two and a half hour presentation which will help you understand
this economic phenomenon, explain who is likely to be a member
of a Stokvel and how the money is spent. Finally, and perhaps
most importantly, the presentation will outline what opportunities
exist to market and sell to Stokvel members.
