Education!

Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) is proud to offer educational lectures and hands-on training during surgical missions to rural hospital staff, where these missions are hosted. Medical professionals working in these areas throughout South Africa and at rural hospitals would not readily get this opportunity, due to lack of funding and educational programmes. Together with platinum sponsors like Amway, along with donations of medical supplies, OSSA helps to strengthen and build the rural hospitals through educational programmes.

Sharpminds (visit www.sharpminds.co.za for more information) one of the few organisations authorised by the American Heart Association to function as a global and mobile international training organisation for Basic Life Support (BLS), has partnered, as a long-term partner, with OSSA to sponsor South African doctors and nurses by bringing this training programme to them at their place of work. OSSA also regularly sponsors Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Training for medical volunteers.

During their last visit in March 2007, BLS training was offered to the nurses and anaesthesiologists of the Ngwelezana Hospital in Empangeni. This was during OSSA's six-month assessment of patients from their inaugural mission in 2006. OSSA, with the support of Sharpminds, provided the BLS training and so assisted in increasing the level of expertise of rural health workers.

OSSA takes great pride in playing a role in supporting rural medical personnel and OSSA also sees it as a tremendous opportunity to show their appreciation and to thank the management and staff of the Ngwelezana Hospital for hosting them during the inaugural Smile Mission in September 2006.

Surgery, anesthesia, and nursing lectures took place during surgery week for the volunteer team, hospital staff, and students.

A multi-disciplinary team including surgeons, anesthesia, pediatricians, dentists and orthodontists, nurses, speech therapists and a wide range of other specialists volunteer their time for Operation Smile missions.

OSSA supports Basic Life Support (BLS), Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Training. Through this training OSSA is assisting the National Department of Health in building up a highly qualified volunteer base for the Southern African Region.
