Our Commitment to Sustainable farming
is a commitment we take very seriously ...
Even before organic farming was 'in' it was our farming method of choice. And because
of our early involvement and ongoing commitment, today we own more certified
organic farmland than any other supplement company in the world - thousands of acres
where plants are grown, harvested and handled using only sustainable, non synthetic,
pesticide-free methods.
Farming Practices:
The soil at Nutrilite's Lakeview Farm in California's San Jachinto Valley is like no other
in the world. Forty years of thoughtful, nature-friendly farming have transformed the
already rich, fertile earth into a plant's paradise. Alfafa, parsley, spinach and carrots
- the plants that form the basis of Nutrilite's exclusive concentrates - all thrive in
Lakeview's nutrient-rich, chemical free fields.
High quality supplements begin with high quality plants. At Nutrilite, this philosophy is
described as 'Quality from The Ground Up'. Nutrilite grows all crops in accordance with
nature and this means replenishing the soil instead of depleting its nutrients, and using
nature rather than chemicals to control weeds and insects. Environmentally friendly,
organic farming methods offer enormous advantages over conventional agriculture.
Focusing on long-term sustainability instead of short-term yields has allowed Nutrilite to
produce healthy, consistent crops year after year without damaging the earth and water
we all depend on.
Soil Management:
Balanced soil is as important to plants as a balanced diet is to humans. Much of
Nutrilite's farming efforts, therefore, involve soil maintenance. For example, crop
rotation is used to protect the existing soil nutrients. Also, cover crops are planted on a
regular basis ploughing these plants into the soil replenishes organic matter for the next
growing season. Compost and naturally mined minerals are added to increase nutrient
levels, and Nutrilite's earthworms work day and night to aerate the soil and keep the
organic content at a healthy level.
Crop management:
Healthy crop management is the counterpart to good soil management. At Lakeview
and other farms, Nutrilite uses nature instead of chemicals to control the insects,
weeds and animals that can destroy crops. For example 'Good insects' like ladybirds
and green lacewings are released into the fields to control plant-eating insects. Insect
eating bats and birds are also encouraged to nest in Nutrilite's fields. Weeds are
controlled through crop rotation, hand weeding, soil solarisation, sheep grazing and
intercropping (planting two crops together for multiple benefits)

From Plants to Concentrates:
Turning raw plants into finished tablets involves two separate
phases. The first phase, converting plants into concentrates, takes
place at Lakeview. The second phase, manufacturing concentrates
into the final packaged supplement, is completed in Buena Park. For
alfalfa, the procedure involves the following steps:
Dehydration: Within approximately two hours of harvesting, the
fresh alfalfa is dehydrated using carefully controlled temperature
and airflow to preserve heat-sensitive nutrients. In this dry state, no
deterioration can take place
Milling: The dehydrated plant material is then milled into fine
powder. Milling reduces particle size without affecting the nutritional
components
Granulation/blending: After milling the different concentrates are
mixed together to create the unique concentrate blends for Nutrilite
products. From seed to powder, the entire concentration process is
designed to produce nothing but high-quality supplements.
Environmental Policy:
Organic pride
Most of the plants used in the manufacture of Amway's NUTRILITE
vitamin and mineral supplements come from Nutrilite certified
organic farms in Lakeview, California as well as from other
organic farms in the U.S., Brazil and Mexico. These foodstuffs are
cultivated without the use of artificial synthetic chemical fertilisers
or pesticides. Our facility at Buena Park, California, is a licensed
pharmaceutical manufacturer using Good Manufacturing Practices
(GMP) for manufacturing food supplements under a more stringent
standard than required by law.
Statistical Process Control (SPC) is used to ensure consistent
manufacturing results and to allow tracing of every ingredient to the
very field in which it was grown. Thousands of quality assurance
tests are performed annually to check our raw materials for purity
and potency before they are used in Nutrilite products.
Because the plants we grow are destined for human consumption,
no chemical pesticides or herbicides are used. Instead, advanced
biological and technical procedures are used to control weeds and
pests. In fact, we pioneered biological pest control, using fungi and
viruses which are harmless to plants and humans to combat pests.
We also enlist the aid of helpful insects, such as ladybirds and
praying mantises, in the fight against harmful insect infestation.
