![]() Six month Assessment Report Empangeni, South Africa |
15 March 2007 During the Inaugural Smile Mission in September 2006, 85 free procedures were provided to 59 babies, children and adults suffering with facial deformities. In order to provide comprehensive care and quality assurance to patients, Operation Smile conducts a post-operative assessment the week following surgery and another six months later to evaluate the long-term needs of patients. Each patient is seen again by surgeons, speech therapists and orthodontists, patients are then photographed by patient imaging technicians to be evaluated by an anonymous board of surgeon volunteers from several countries. The six month assessment team consisted of 11 medical and non-medical volunteers who were assisted by nurses and staff of the Ngwelezana Hospital and the hospital manager, Dr Peter Hasleau. A total of 36 patients returned to Ngwelenzana Hospital on 15 March 2007 for the assessment and three new potential patients were screened by the doctors. ![]() |
